Outlines and Toon (Deprecated)

This thread is deprecated, please check : http://www.guerillarender.com/forum/vie … p?pid=4078

---

I'd like to show you an old but cool Guerilla Render feature : Outline for toon shading.

You may have noticed that the Guerilla materials have a Outline slider that produces a nice and stable outline.
You can control in your shader the color and the width on this outline. And it's 3d motionblur compatible !

Check the test animation.

This is the outline alone. Note that the width of the outline changes on the body :

The shader I did for this example. Nothing fancy, color1 is the vertex color painted in Maya to control the line width :

Here is the vertex color :

The final result with the toon shading :

I hope this example will inspire you ! We don't see enough cell shading here wink

Some technical comments : the animation rendering time is 30s/frame in average on my CoreI7. I've disabled the camera motion blur to check the outline stability. AA is 8x8, shadine rate 0.1 but I've got the same result at 1.

Hey!
Nice to see these ol'days features still at work smile

I Shall add that the outline shader is customizable at will, either for width and color!

Re: Outlines and Toon (Deprecated)

Few years ago, I have tested the cell shading in Max, it's pretty simple with lot of parameters.
I'm testing your method, But, I can't have a similar result.
It will be good to add more than 2 cell and tweak them in smooth etc like a ramp.

Can you help me to do a good picture with the cell shading ?

An exemple of my Lola in cell shading wink

Hey Pitiwazou!

Have a look at the 3 cell material smile
Obviously, the gradient node will help a lot, though it is less powerfull for nice antialiasing...

Re: Outlines and Toon (Deprecated)

It will be possible to add other style of brush for the outline ?

Even with a smoothstep node I canot blur the edges.

Re: Outlines and Toon (Deprecated)

ahh you look for blurred edge sorry... setrange then clamp and it's done. You can mix lots of them to obtain more than 2 or 3 steps. Hope it help smile
put a small difference between input min and max and keep output min max to 0 1.
