Subdivision

Hi,

I have a problem about Guerilla's Subdivision. Result is different from 3dsmax(meshsmooth, turbosmooth, OpenSuvdiv).
I can get sharp edges with 3dsmax. But Guerilla's result is very roundly. Please give me advice.

Thank you.

Re: Subdivision

Hi,

Do you use creases anywhere?
As of today, Guerilla doesn't support creases.

Re: Subdivision

NO. It is just Editable Poly. But This is made with Cinema4D and I get it as FBX.

Modeler didn't use creases in Cinema4D.

Do you have any idea to optimize for Guerrilla?

Thank you.

Re: Subdivision

I found that shader setting is involved. Picture of the above it is set to 1 Spec2. But Default setting(Spec2, Metal, Spec1 is 0) will be more sharp.(not same as 3dsmax)

Re: Subdivision

Hi,

The Spec2 layer is meant to be used for coating (such as varnish or wet maps), you can use Spec1 for a simple specular.
Tweak the roughness to get the appropriate glossy look.

Also, if you use textures, you should pay attention to the maps subdivision rules. Guerilla has several settings to control that in the Subdivision tab of the object.

Cheers,
Ben

Re: Subdivision

Hi Ben,

I tested more. I think Shader may not be relationship. Problem may be Subdivision method.

Modeler use Cinema4D. Its Subdiv method is Catmull Clark. He export a model without Subdiv. So I use TurboSmooth in 3dsmax. Result is almost same. Then I export its model via Alembic without Subdiv. But Guerilla's result is diffrernt form our Subdiv.
Modeler and I didn't use creases.

I tried all option in Guerilla Subdivision category. But I couldn't get same results.
I don't know MAYA. Subdiv method of MAYA and Guerilla is different from Catmull Clark?

I will try to subdivide my model with 3dsmax, instead of Guerilla's Subdiv. or I give up the use Guerilla.

Re: Subdivision

Hi Inohide,

It seems like normals are not properly handled on your mesh. I've forced Guerilla to generate normals from the subdivided geometry, and I get the proper result:

Here are the normals:

On top, the regenerated normals (correct), below the subdivided normals (incorrect).
I'm investigating this issue right now, thank you for reporting this.

Cheers,
Ben

Re: Subdivision

Hi Ben,

For now, I use TurboSmooth with max instead of Guerilla's Subdiv. I got correct image.

Thank you for your investigation. I have ready to help you.

My 3dsMax is 2016. Modeler,s C4D is R16.

Thank you.
