3dsmax Workflow

Hello all,

We are actually finishing a 3dsmax/Guerilla project  based on alembic workflow...everything worked quite well !
I'll post a making-off for this project soon, with all details on how we worked on this...naming conventions, smoke, particles, hair... if you're interested of course wink

Re: 3dsmax Workflow

Hi Mat,

Would love a workflow for this. I tried using the Alembic exporter from Max, but I cannot import it into GR. Any advice?
Cheers!

Re: 3dsmax Workflow

Hi Mat,

It should work fine with Exocortex Crate. Which alembic exporter do you use ?

Re: 3dsmax Workflow

Hello,

Sorry for answering so late.
For Geometry and particles we used Exocortex Crate on max 2016.
For Smoke we used FumeFX FXD files and for Hair guides we are using Ornatrix here.
Cheers

Hey Mat!
Thanks for sharing!

I think Cyril was asking MattJohnson, but your explanations are very welcome, indeed.

Re: 3dsmax Workflow

Oops smile

We still have troubles passing Guerilla tags (via max custom attributes) through alembic for now.
The workaround we found is to export a Json file (or .txt or xml whatever...) with the alembic and read it while importing in Guerilla sad
We just finished the max part...The Guerilla part is on it's way wink

Cheers,

Mat

Curious... We highly rely on this.

As Guerilla doc state: http://guerillarender.com/doc/1.4/User Guide_Scene Graph_Tags.html

Add [pre]GuerillaTags[/pre] attribute of type string to your object and add comma-separated words for use as tag.

Then add [pre]GuerillaTags[/pre] to Attribute value of the alembic export UI.

This bring to the following command line (FYI):

Code:

AbcExport -verbose -j "-frameRange 1001 1001 -attr rgbPP -attr GuerillaTags -uvWrite -writeVisibility -dataFormat ogawa -root |pSphere1 -file /home/narann/test.abc";

I agree: The doc could simply screenshot the "Attribute" section of the "Alembic Export" window with the "GuerillaTags" value setted and it would make everything clearer for Maya users.

PS: And after finishing my message, I just realize you are on Max... Sorry, I let the message if it can help other peoples falling here...

Re: 3dsmax Workflow

Hey Matt,

Just so you known, we discovered recently that ExoCortex would write Maya extra attributes in a channel we didn't support. Guerilla 1.4.0b40 fixed that, so if ExoCortex for 3dsMax supports user/custom attributes, then maybe you can give it another try!

Cheers,
Ben

Re: 3dsmax Workflow

Yes I saw that on 1b40 and tried but...3dsMax just doesn't want to export these CA in alembic sad
