Re: Alien Sea creature WIP

Hey guys,

I was wondering how you would seup a layered shader kind of network.
I know you can create sub shaders for each of the parameters like SSS, glasss, etc with maps, but is there a way to drive an entire shader opacity with maps as a mask? Similar to the maya layered shader node.
Here is a small update, adding some growing stuff , transferred the ZBush maps into mari, getting ready for some detailing action
cheers

Re: Alien Sea creature WIP

Hi Pascal !

Nice update smile This guy has some serious skin problems !

No we don't propose such layered shaders, for differents performances and workflow reasons. I can maybe help you to do what you need with the current workflow ?

Re: Alien Sea creature WIP

Hey Cyril, thanks for stopping by
I just wanted to have regions of the skin with completely different diffuse specular and sss responses, a bit like crusts vs flesh to get some shading contrast.
I have tried painting masks for the SSS value but to me it's less intuitive than having a separate shader in which I could just tweak all parameters by pushing sliders around, not necessarily relying on maps for each parameter.
cheers!

Hi PascalR

Indeed. The Sub shader workflow can be annoying in some case.
Have you try with the old workflow in the browser ?

In your case it could be more flexible to share nodes with an easier feedback.

Re: Alien Sea creature WIP

Hi,

As Gam said, you can create a dedicated shader for this object. Create a Material and build something like that :

http://guerillarender.com/images/layered_shaders.png

Then in the RenderGraph, assign your object to this shader.

If you need AOVs, you will need to mix them also, and output them in a StandardAOVs node.

Hi hulud

I guess your exemple would increase rendering time.
Do I am right ?

Cheers

Thank you Gam and Hulud! How do you expose all the shader parameters in the rendergraph like you did Hulud?

Re: Alien Sea creature WIP

Here is a texture update on the face, I find it odd to have to play with both diffuse normal and spec1 normal to get a bump effect, and I quickly get some strange dark lines with the spec1Normal maps. Would love to have a simple bump slot in the shader smile
